What’s the difference between tarot and oracle decks?

Tarot and oracle decks are card decks designed for divination practices that can also be used for gaming.

A tarot deck is a set deck of 78 cards and is associated with the specific practise of tarot reading. It is possible to learn and recognize the various tarot cards and be able to ready any tarot deck. On the other hand, oracle decks have no set structure and the number of cards can vary.

Oracle decks may or may not have a theme, and interpretation of different cards varies from deck to deck. Oracle decks aren’t associated with a specific tradition, but with card-based divination in general.

What are the major and minor arcana?

Traditional tarot decks are divided into the major and minor arcana.

The major arcana comprises 22 cards that signify profound life lessons, pivotal moments, and spiritual journeys. The minor arcana comprises 56 cards that cover daily life, mundane situations, and short-term events.

The minor arcana is divided into four suits: wands, chalices, swords, and coins, and are numbered by rank 1–10, followed by four face cards: page, knight, queen, and king.

    Who is the Fablemaker?

The Fablemaker is an enigmatic storyteller , a crafter of the weave and an agent of fate. They encourage people to look inward and reflect on themselves and their lives. Little is known about them, and there may be more mysteries yet to uncover…

Who are the Fablemaker’s tarot and oracle decks for?

The Fablemaker’s tarot and oracle decks are for fans of tarot, oracle, and roleplaying games alike. They are designed for divination as much as they are designed to delight at any game table.

Do I need to play Dungeons & Dragons (D&D) or roleplaying games to enjoy the Fablemaker’s tarot and oracle decks?

No! You don’t need to play D&D to enjoy the Fablemaker’s tarot and oracle decks.

While the tarot and oracle decks include elements that are suitable for use in roleplaying games, the cards and guidebook are focused on supporting the spiritual and intuitive practice of card-based divination.

How does the animation on the Fablemaker’s Deck of Many Things work?

The cards use lenticular printing, allowing us to create a looping, 8-frame animation on the card. Lenticular printing allows movement to be seen when the card is tilted.

What edition of D&D are the Fablemaker’s tarot and oracle designed for?

The RPG elements in the Fablemaker’s Animated Tarot  and the Fablemaker’s Deck of Many Things are designed for Dungeons & Dragons fifth edition (2014) but are compatible with the 2024 5.5e rules.

Who are the artists behind the Fablemaker’s decks?

    The Fablemaker’s Animated Tarot

    • Animation: Kamille Areopagita, Kevin Areopagita, and Liam Gregg
    • Additional illustrations: Meredith Smallwood

    • Illustrations: Yoshi Yoshitani
The animated tarot deck is thick, what’s the recommended way to shuffle it?

The Fablemaker’s Animated Tarot Guidebook contains instructions for shuffling the deck, which you can also find on our blog here.

For ease of shuffling, card sleeves assist with hand shuffling as well as protecting your cards.

What are the best ways to protect my cards?

We recommend keeping the cards in protective plastic tarot-sized sleeves to minimize the chances they become scratched or damaged.

Risk... Reward... Which cards will you draw?

Stories guide us toward intuition and creativity, whether they are narratives we understand about our own lives through tarot, or the tales we create with our friends in roleplaying games. The Fablemaker’s Tarot and Oracle decks are inspired by the Dungeons & Dragons roleplaying game and incorporate themes of fantasy, adventuring, and overcoming challenges. Storytelling is the beating heart of Fablemaker’s Tarot and Oracle Decks, whether it be your story or your favorite character’s story.

    Stunning Art

Art is central to storytelling in the Fablemaker’s Tarot and Oracle Decks, connecting you with the themes and characters depicted. We pride ourselves on beautiful artwork by skilled artists from around the world.

Every card is hand illustrated—and in the case of the Fablemaker’s Animated Tarot—animated. Each step of the Fool’s journey is beautifully brought to life with all twenty-two major arcana cards animated. The cards of the minor arcana receive the same premium treatment as the major arcana—all animated with lenticular technology.

The Fablemaker’s Deck of Many Things features Yoshi Yoshitani’s gorgeous illustrations in both color and monochrome. The color cards include bold jewel tones accented with dazzling gold, and the monochrome cards remind us that life is never black and white, and that there is nuance in shades of gray. The deck is also available with a beautiful holo-foil finish.

    Guidebooks for Real Life

The guidebooks for the Fablemaker’s Tarot and Oracle Decks are written with care and designed to guide your interpretation of the cards, and help you dig deeper into the questions you want to contemplate when you do your reading. No tarot or oracle alone can solve your problems, but the cards can help you figure out what you want to do next.

You can use the guidebooks that accompany the Fablemaker’s Tarot and Oracle Decks to intuit tarot and oracle in your daily life. While the books are designed to accentuate the Fablemaker's Tarot and Oracle Decks, they can also be used alongside your deck of choice.

The guidebooks expand on the themes of the cards to help you interpret the rich symbolism in the art, and apply the cards’ meanings to your unique situation. Each card has its own entry and keywords to ground your navigation of the deck.

As well as a deep dive into the layers of meaning of the cards, each one is accompanied by several questions you can contemplate as you draw from the deck or do your reading. These questions are compassionately and sensitively crafted to help you understand your situation better and to guide your choices as you move forward and face your challenges.

    For Roleplaying Game Fans

To add a roleplay twist to your readings, the Fablemaker’s decks include suggestions for tabletop-inspired spreads, such as for campaigns, characters, and stories. The decks also offer new game mechanics, such as class features for each Dungeons & Dragons 5e class, feats, and all-new mechanics tied to the cards themselves.

    RPG Supplements

In addition to the oracle deck and guidebook, the Kickstarter campaign for the Fablemaker’s Deck of Many Things funded several stretch goals for supplementary material.

    Accessories

The Fablemaker’s Deck of Many Things line includes accessories inspired by the themes and art of the oracle deck.
