Everything you’ve wanted to know about SHIFT RPG… and more!
SHIFT RPG is an upcoming indie tabletop roleplaying game (TTRPG) by Canadian company Hit Point Press. SHIFT was created to offer pick up and play opportunities while providing diverse options to Game Masters (GMs) and players alike. Here, we’ve collected some common questions about the game. Keep reading to learn more about it!
Is SHIFT a complete system?

SHIFT is a complete TTRPG ruleset that can be used to play in any setting you wish. You can pick up a free quickstart that allows you to enjoy the game early. The full release will include a wide array of GM tools and additional worlds for you to enjoy.
What do I need to play SHIFT?
To play SHIFT, you need a Game Master (GM) to lead the narrative, and at least a single player. Each player and the GM needs the following dice: a D4, D6, D8, D10 and D12.
Do I need to purchase a book or a collection of books?
No purchase is necessary for the quickstart rules. For the core rulebook that includes World Sparks—microsettings for you to play in—you can back the SHIFT Kickstarter campaign.
How long does it take to learn SHIFT?

During our playtests, we’ve found that new players can start the game itself after only 30 minutes. This time includes introducing the SHIFT core rules and the setting, but also includes character creation. Players who already know how to play can hop into a game with only a few minutes of prep time and still have a fully fleshed out and unique character.
How long is a typical game session of SHIFT?
Our average one shot games are approximately 3 hours in length after character creation. But your game could be longer or shorter depending on the story you wish to tell.
How many players can play SHIFT?

We recommend playing SHIFT with a table of 6 people, including the GM. That said, SHIFT can be played with as many players as the GM can comfortably guide and as little as a GM and a single player.
Where can I try SHIFT?
You can sign up to be a player in a game of SHIFT in the SHIFT RPG Discord! We run an Organized Play program where GMs run sessions of SHIFT on the weekends. During October 2025, these games are taking place each weekend! Join the Discord and sign up for a game!
